Comparison of Design Standards for Steel Railway Bridges

چکیده
The popularity of steel bridges is increasing in the modern era because of its unmatchable advantages. Engineers are using various national codes to achieve an optimum design. Some of the Asian countries are using their own codes and also American and other country code provisions to achieve better economy and better standards. In this regard the comparison of design codes is relevant. Comparison of code provisions for design of steel bridges enables us to know which country spends more money to meet their design standards also which country imposes maximum safety standards. In this paper design of steel bridge based on Indian and European standards are done and the results are compared. This study is concentrated on the total deflection and weight of the steel girder by varying the grade of steel, panel aspect ratio, web slenderness ratio. Based on the design results, conclusions are arrived at to know the behavior of plate girder bridges when designed using Indian and European

Research into Filler-beam Deck Bridges with Encased Beams of Various Sections
Load-bearing structures of deck railway bridges with encased filler beams have been used for short and middle spans of a maximum of 24 metres. For over a hundred years they have been designed in cases with little headroom. The first bridges were constructed with no interaction between steel beams and concrete floor slabs, the structural steel working as a bearing element and the concrete in the...

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/15732479.2012.670250 Abstract Railway bridges currently encounter the challenges of increasing the load capacity while the environmental sustainability should be achieved. However, it has been realized that the environmental assessment of railway bridges has not been integrated into the decision making process, the standard guideline and criterion is s...

13 A large number of the bridges in the European railway networks are metallic bridges. 14 The increasing volume of traffic and axle weight of trains mean that for many 15 structures the loads today are much higher than those envisaged when they were 16 designed. This paper presents a summary of the different recommendations and 17 advices proposed in “Guidelines for Load and Resistance Assessm...
متن کاملStructural Health Monitoring for Life Extension of Railway Bridges:Strategies and Outcomes
Here the experience gained by the author and his co-researchers, in an association with the Indian Railways for over a decade, on the use of structural health monitoring strategies for establishing the current condition of steel railway bridges and an estimation of the remaining life of those bridges, is presented. Even in the case of bridges where the material used is either masonry or concret...
متن کاملMethods for Better Assessment of Fatigue and Deterioration in Bridges and Other Steel or Concrete Constructions
Large metal and concrete structures suffer by various kinds of deterioration, and accurate prediction of the remaining life is important. This paper informs about two methods for its assessment. One method, suitable for steel bridges and other constructions exposed to fatigue, monitors the loads and damage accumulation using information systems for the operation and the finite element model of ...
